To say that one has to save NITC presupposes that there is something from which it has to be saved. It is well known to the insiders and to a certain extent outsiders that NITC is in deep crisis; the stench of decay which was covered up by those in power is slowly but steadily seeping though its decorated walls. The truth that the emperor is stark naked is out and the only question that remains is, are there any children bold enough and innocent enough to shout it. This blog aims to give space (or hyperspace a la Baudrillard) to such cries of rebellion against the farce being acted out in NITC by corrupt and fascist authorities at this moment with tax payers money. All those who have not fallen into the pit of greed, selfishness and self promotion by playing support cast to the power centers are welcome to air their views and to lay down the facts which will help in unearthing the root causes of the decline of this institute.

As a first step (a rather tentative one), let us try to list, in the order of increasing seriousness and complexity, three main issues plaguing NITC now.

1

The most self evident problem that NITC faces now is naked corruption; it will never be an exaggeration to state that corruption has become the hallmark of NITC. And it seems to know no boundaries, from the lowest levels of administration to the highest level the stench of corruption is so widespread that it is now being seen as normal. Let us try to list out some curious facts about our institute: the canteen and mini canteen contract is being given to same person for over 30 years now in spite of the fact that the food is well below average and the price level is at par or even higher than the normal market rate; the chief engineer was given extensions after extensions after his retirement ignoring protests from many quarters by the current Director who never blinks an eye when very good faculty members leave NITC due to unsatisfactory working atmosphere; almost all the construction work is being done by the same contractor; after the process of yearly faculty recruitment, no selected list is put up anywhere, the waiting list is non existent and when at last the administration was forced to publish the selected list because of RTI applications the list turns out to be a joke. Talk to anyone you see at kattangal and he will tell you how lower level contracts are handed over in NITC, how much you have to pay and to whom and you will be surprised at the extent of corruption. Real estate business men, engineers and middlemen in and around Calicut will be able to tell you a lot about the corruption at the higher tiers of the ladder, but its extent is very clear once you take a look at the construction works going around the campus. It is evident that many are making huge chunks of money at the expense of this institute and at the expense of the common man who pays to keep institutes like this running. We believe that there will be broad consensus on the view that these persons are criminals of highest order and should be dealt with an iron hand; but there is another small group who are even more vile that the corrupt ones.

These are people inside our institute who, over the course of the last few years, have clearly understood that the best way for self promotion and for moving up the ladder is to play support cast for the current administration by providing them with support from all sides. Such people get posted to almost all the “chairs” because the administration is sure that they will never ask disturbing questions and shall play the role of intellectual slaves to
perfection. In doing so, this group gets out of the way blessings in the form of professorships, new “schools”, UG and PG programmes, research grants, lavish trips and even playgrounds. One such “school” (they gave it a fancy name which has nothing to do with the type of work done inside) was sanctioned overlooking much more legitimate claims and in another case a UG and PG programme was sanctioned which is working so fine that they are conducting walk in admission now. This group has to be characterized as much more vile that the corrupt coterie as they are showing the audacity to further their career interests by giving unstinting support to the corrupt and in doing so are sucking the very blood out of NITC.

Corruption of this magnitude on all levels is not just a financial issue; it is an academic issue too. In the pursuit of money by any means the people with power are showing no regard at all for the long time planning aspect and are giving sanctions to projects based on their scope of making easy money and not based on their utility to the institute in the long term. Crores of rupees in being wasted on erecting huge buildings which are far too big for
the concerned departments and they are being allotted to people who act second fiddle to the administration. Courses are sanctioned not based on academic considerations but to please those who are supporting the corrupt coterie and what is even worse, the faculty recruitment process has become a complete farce. All these have a direct impact on the academic standing of the institute and students and sincere faculty members will be very badly hit by these. The biggest impact of this culture of corruption is to set up an environment inside the institute wherein greed, personal bias, cheap self promotions and naked loot are legitimized; a situation has arisen inside NITC in the past half a decade or so in which it is impossible for anyone to survive and to prosper without internalizing these rotten values. This, in our view, explains the loss of many excellent faculty members in the
last few years; they were not ready to trade their identity and to go along with this culture. Many of the students are forced into a subdued existence because their independence in thought and action are no longer welcome here. The greatest tragedy in this state of affairs in that some among the student minority have actually started internalizing these values as in evident from the fact that none of the ‘Ragam’ festivals in the last 4 years has been properly audited and it is common knowledge that this minority is grossly misusing the funds with the implicit permission from administration and in particular the self appointed cultural commissar of NITC Mr. Saseendran.  (It is very interesting to study the evolution of this self appointed students welfare commissar and the central role that he continues to play in all the rotten games going on inside NITC, but this is not a space for that, we will
give that in a different post)

2

The second issue that our institute is facing today surfaces itself once we ask this simple question: Why, in spite of this naked looting, has not any popular movements being mobilized against the rot? It is very important for us to try and analyse this lack of any serious rebellion. The situation at NITC has steadily gone from bad to worse and from worse to outright pathetic in the last 3 or 4 years. Thus, it would only be very normal to conclude that the main responsibility for this degradation lies with the current administration at NITC which consists of a Director imported from Warangal to boost the academic ‘credentials’ of the institute and his handful bunch of support cast. It has to be said that there is a strong case for such an argument but to base our analyses on this one reason alone will be naive and will be guilty of over simplification. It would be the same as arguing that the cause of the rise of fascism in Germany was Hitler; Hitler was only a symptom, the social, economic and ideological conditions for the growth of an ultra right movement like fascism existed in the fabric of post war German society; Hitler and his party just took advantage of it. Any analyses of the pitiful condition that NITC finds itself in now will only be worthy if it tries to explain the conditions that helped the current administration to follow an autocratic path unchallenged. For this, a peep into the past is unavoidable.

Many senior faculty members here bear witness to the fact that during the beginning of his “reign” the current Director was very apprehensive and unsure of what to expect from NITC. He is even on record saying that he is being very careful in making decisions on even small matters because he has heard that keralites are known for their social vigil and political commitment. But such doubts and apprehensions seem to have evaporated very fast as we proved by our behavior that NITC is an island inside Kerala, walled on all sides, which share nothing in common with the critical spirit of the people of the God’s Own Country. When the new administration under the able direction of the Director began slowly to set in motion the wheels of degradation, it was not the faculty who protested, it was not the staff, but it was a bunch of students who stood up taking upon themselves the mantle to fight. The issues that they took up then are as pertinent now as they were then: the widespread corruption related to new constructions, the indiscriminate felling of tress in our campus in the name of development, the idiotic policy related to the repeating of courses, the price rise in the college canteen, decision to destroy the invaluable herbal plantations for building the library, the naked irregularities in faculty recruitment and so on. Many of us are now realizing and are indeed ready to accept that a lot of these issues were very genuine; but what is of interest is not our repentance now but our reaction to the student movement then.

The way in which the NIT administration dealt with the student movement is typical of all autocratic regimes. The merits of the arguments and protests were not considered and the movement was instantly characterized as one ‘designed’ to politicize NITC. It is true that the protesters were organized under the banner of a student organization, but refusing to see the merits of their protests and instead spreading baseless fear amongst all about ‘sinister’ designs to ‘capture’ NITC was aimed at deflecting the spotlight from them and it did the trick. These students were accused of trying to spread a ‘trade union’ culture and its one of those great ironies of history that the same word would be used by the Director to characterize the Faculty association and even by Kapil Sibal to ridicule striking IIT professors!!! The faculty and the staff swallowed the administration’s arguments without questions and obediently assisted them in the fight against ‘politics’. Now after 3 years, at least some of us understand that by deflecting attention form essential issues to an ‘imaginary’ threat, the official think-tank took all of us for a jolly ride; we were fooled! This strategy was not the brain child of NITC administration, but is one which has been honed to perfection by many autocratic and corrupt regimes to keep their people under control by generating an imaginary ‘enemy’. For those who are interested, Noam Chomsky’s work gives a graphical description of how the “Red scare” was used by the US administration to justify blatant genocides in many parts of the globe and to keep public opinion favorable. Currently, Islam phobia is being used to the same effect. This is what Chomsky calls the ‘manufacture of consent’; at NITC the specter of politics was successfully used to manufacture the consent needed to crush genuine student movements with the help of faculty, staff and other students who assisted thinking foolishly that they are doing a great service to the institution. It is only now that the real meaning of what we have done becomes clear: we have effectively helped the administration to stifle all protests, to silence all voices bold enough to question and to prepare ground for autocratic functioning and naked looting of public wealth. If the faculty and other students had extended issue based support to these protests, by now G.R.C. Reddy would have been back in Warangal nursing his wounds and crying over his lost dreams.

The bottom line of this dose of history is that politically and ideologically informed people and movements were and are constantly tarnished and ridiculed by the officialdom and its cronies at NITC. They are typically characterized as motivated by ‘external’ elements and as a totally unacceptable ‘plague’ to academics. The students and faculty members are indoctrinated with the official storyline about the need to keep ‘politics’ away from the campus and a vast majority of them buy these arguments without a whimper of questioning. Those close to power at NITC and those who are benefiting from it like to present ‘politics’ as empty rhetoric carried out with the help of ‘outside’ forces and as perpetual trouble makers hindering the progress of the institute by resorting to violent strikes and protests. How much truth is there in such claims and why are the power centers
this much afraid about ideologically inspired people and the movements led by them? The reason for this is implicit in their utterances itself, philosophically and ideologically informed people are in fact ‘trouble makers’ and ‘rebels’ and if there is a strong presence of such persons and movements the power centers can rest assured that their loot will always be questioned at every turn. What is even more alarming to them is that these people do have the power and organizing capacity to trigger mass protests against the rotten administration and to actually effect real changes in the power structures at NITC. Much of what goes on around us in the name of politics is pretty rotten stuff, but real political awareness and movements have nothing to do with them. Well meaning people at NITC who are fed up with the current situation and who wants to do something about it, but have bought the official idea that ideology is bad did try to make use of nonpolitical means of protests. The current state of the faculty association which tried to protest in an ‘academic’ manner is a point worth noting, it was simply crippled by those in power.

The proponents of 'apolitics' will be doing a great service to NITC if they realise that India is the result of one of the biggest political movements of modern history, (It was Gandhi who told students to throw away their books and join the struggle for independence, NITC professors, if active then, would have accused him of being nonacademic and being motivated by 'nasty external' elements), it is because of a long drawn out ideological and political battle that everyone in this state got the right of self determination irrespective of their caste or creed, the eight hour workday that you are enjoying now was won on the sacrifice of thousands of people, there is not even a single right on earth that has been granted voluntarily by the power structures, the soil on which you stand and talk about 'dirty politics' is soaked with the blood of martyrs on whose political struggle this country and state was built. And when you think that all this happened just 60 odd years ago it clearly demonstrates the extent of our hypocrisy. To say that we should fight the corrupt and fascist coterie at NITC using 'nonpolitical' means is like saying that you should fight the British imperialism through courts and other structures that they have build; the structures of power are build only for taming protests and if we have to fight them, we have to resort to ideologically and politically aware movements. It is not that Saseendran and Paul Joseph doesn’t know this, they know it very well and they know it too that if a politically active movement takes place their honeymoon with power is over and it is this realisation that is forcing them to discredit politics and philosophy. It is a dark joke to see these people talk about 'outsiders' and 'outside motivation' etc, who are these outsiders, they are the general public, they are the real owners of this institute, it is their money that is being pumped into this institute to keep every 'academic' well paid and well fed, contrary to what the Director and self proclaimed commissars pretend, the 'outsiders' are the real financiers and owners of this place and we are all his employees; in other words the 'outsiders' are the real 'insiders'. The 'academics' inside this institute seems to think that a shop keeper at kattangal has no say in the matters of the institute, he is wrong, people have a big say and they have a right to know and to correct things happening inside, if anyone is uncomfortable with this he/she would be well advised to move to a private institution.

3
Over points 1 and 2 we have seen how corruption is eating away the very roots of this institute and how it is having an adverse effect on the long time planning and academic climate of NITC. We have also seen how the absence of genuine ideological movements is hindering any chance of their being a resistance against this corrupt administration and how the power centers are working overtime to see that such movements are quashed before they are even born. Now we shall move on to what is, in our view, the gravest issue that our institute is facing and which is the root cause of all that is wrong with NITC at this moment. We shall not try to deal with this issue comprehensively here, the issue is too deep and vast for that, we shall try that in another post dedicated fully to addressing this problem; here we shall give the main points. We shall begin by citing some concrete facts: For the first time in its history, an assistant professor at NITC was denied promotion a year ago because of his inability to bring in funded projects, the officialdom at NITC is now proclaiming openly that the main aim of the institute is to prepare students for the software industry and not in any sense ‘educate’ them, ‘industry oriented’ courses are getting the nod ahead of ‘knowledge oriented’ courses because the latter is seen as a waste of money, the research duration of a scholar was extended by a year because of the fact that he didn’t include any ‘practical’ applications in his thesis, faculty promotions and research thesis submission is being decided by the quantity of publications rather than the quality of work, in spite of having a PG course the math department recruits only faculty in computational areas and physics department in applied physics areas, (it will be interesting to know who teaches General Relativity in physics department now) the placement department head goes from class to class preaching the sermon that reading newspapers, literature, philosophy etc are a waste of time and students should only be reading business news. The above events may look independent of each other when you first see them but they are not, they are the manifestations of the same culture being cultivated very consciously in educational institutions around our country by the corporate – conservative politics nexus.

The phenomenon was christened “Academic Capitalism” by Sheila Slaughter and refers to the movement among the corporate planners to make public education into a private good which produces work power for the industry [2]. This means that the corporate sector wants state funded education to be organized in such a manner so as to produce obedient, well trained (not well educated), conservative young men and women who can be safely recruited and made use of by the corporations to make unlimited profits. Over the past 20 years or so, the central planners have been working overtime to make sure that the IITs, the NITs and other engineering colleges become places for breeding ultra right wing workforce and nothing else and all the different facts mentioned above are its consequences. It is very clear that the production of such an impotent workforce is not possible if the student community reads standard newspapers and become politically aware, if they want to read they can read popular junks like Chetan Bhagat or Frederich Forsyth, if they want to see films they can see horrible bollywood or Hollywood craps, if they want to read papers they may read business dailies which legitimize greed and idolize profit; but they should be shielded from the real stuff because that will give them the insight and the knowledge to ask questions and to rebel against corporate culture. The corporate world and their friends in the placement department know what happens to a young man when he is allowed to read Neruda and sees:

I
am the one who remembers,
although there are no eyes left on the earth,

I’ll go on seeing
and that blood
will be recorded here,
that love will go on burning here.
There is no forgetting, ladies and gentlemen,
and through my wounded mouth
those mouths will go on singing.

or what changes inside him when he reads Chomsky:

“Predatory Capitalism is incapable of meeting human needs that can be expressed only in collective terms, and its concept of competitive man who seeks only to maximize wealth and power, who subjects himself to market relationships, to exploitation and external authority, is anti human and intolerable in the deepest sense.”

They know very well that their game is over once a student gets hold of a copy of the Nobel Prize winning novel “The Golden Notebook” by Dorris Lessing and reads:

“Ideally, what should be told to every child, repeatedly, throughout his educational life is something like this: ‘You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudices and the choices of a particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being
taught by people who have been able to accommodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self perpetuating system. Those of you, who are more robust and individual than others, will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself – educating your own judgment. Those that stay must remember, always and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this particular society.”

Young men and women, if let free to do serious reading will turn up in the placement department and ask the question why it is mandatory to put on shoes when appearing for an interview and what makes full sleeve shirt more ‘decent’ than half sleeve ones? It will take much more than a shirt printed with flowers to logically defend these idiotic practices. These young people will ask the corporate CEOs what their firm has got to offer which is worthy of a human being and that question will signal the end for corporate power. So it is extremely important, from the point of view of the power centers, to see to it that students do not get deep knowledge; the best way is to discredit all that is deep and rebellious and to make the students into mere puppets learning the standard tools. It is this duty that much of NITC is doing now; they are serving corporate power.

A couple of years ago, there was a discussion at NITC on the idea of giving the degree 'Doctor of Engineering' instead of the normal PhD (Doctor of Philosophy); the proponents of this idea thought that the concept of PhD was too old and is not relevant to our times. This is an extremely important point of view because it points out the direction in which the institute is moving now. The idea behind PhD is the conviction that when you go deep
enough in any field, philosophical shades begin to appear and so original research in any field is essentially nothing but a philosophical quest. In fact science itself began as a part of philosophical investigation and it was seen as a tool to investigate natural phenomenon. This changed with the advent of the modern industry and science and engineering began to be seen as having nothing to do with philosophical investigations. This development was triggered with blessings from the industry which wanted the tools of science to be used as profit making machines. But still genuine deep thinkers continues to be philosophically oriented. Einstein is the most famous example and his philosophical and literary orientation is legendary. We have already seen how deep thinking among young people can herald the end of corporate culture, so it is crucially important from the point of view of profit mongers to assure that deep thinking is not cultivated and that students and faculty members are not given the freedom to see the beauty hidden inside their respective fields of study. They should see all that they study as tools for acquiring a good job or as tools of publishing a paper and getting a promotion, then they will never ask disturbing questions. The whole academic culture is being tuned to do exactly this job by the central planners and institutes including NITC are walking into the trap. Lets take the example of the condition which is slowly being implemented that all faculty members need to bring in sponsored research projects. This condition is the norm in united states and its aims and the politics behind it has been very well documented by eminent theoretical physicist Lee Smolin [3]. Funding comes from either the government agencies or from private corporations and the vast majority of such funding goes only for projects which are useful either for defence forces or for private corporations. Smolin, in his wonderful book, sights the example of a Nobel Prize winner in physics whose salary was cut down by the university because of his decision to work on fundamental problems which have no chance of bringing in any kinds of funds. So the concentration on funding has a clear political side to it, it is to make sure that faculty members and consequently students do not 'waste' their time working on fundamentally important and deep scientific questions. If anyone tries to do that he/she will have nothing to show as yearly funding obtained and it will be very hard for him/her to progress. The central government, with the strong support of the corporate lobby, is slowly beginning to implement funding based channeling of research here also and our 'academicians' are supporting it whole heartedly without knowing that they are losing their academic independence once and for ever; from now on corporate interests will decide on what we shall do research on. This is a clear cut political and ideological move supported by right wing politicians and corporate interests and NITC is unaware of it because they are being told that political consciousness is a bad thing. You need to have a high level of ideological knowledge and awareness to understand the politics behind funding agencies and the 'apolitical' movement led by Saseendran, Paul Joseph, Sureshbabu etc makes sure that this does not happen. It was Simone De Beauvoir who wrote that: "Indifference is also a stand", in the same sense it should also be said that apolitics is also politics, it is a tool in the hands of those who wants to support right wing conservative politics and wants to help private greed. If someone proclaims to you that he is 'apolotical' you can be pretty sure that he has strong sympathy for right wing politics. (Deep study of this phenomenon of 'apolitics' and its connections with private capital has been done by Slavoj Zizek, Terry Eagleton and Naom Chomsky among many others and detailed analysis can be found in their writings).

If you analyse the academic stipulations being implemented at our institute, you can easily see that every one of them is tailor made for achieving the above mentioned aim. Take the over importance given for the quantity of published work and the virtual negligence about its quality. If you are reacquired to publish n number of papers within a fixed span of time in order to land a promotion or if you are forced to publish a stipulated number of papers to get your degree it is evident that you will be forced to do substandard work. What is more important is that any chance of deep fundamental investigation is ruled out as in that case you will never be able to meet the condition of publications. (Einstein took 11 years to formulate General Relativity, Andrew Wiles published nothing for 10 years when working on the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, Perelman worked for 8 years and came up with the proof for Poincare Conjecture). These policies are aimed at killing originality in research and education and to force young minds to work on 'practical' problems which are useful for private capital to make profit, they are aimed at churning out an academic system in which survival is equivalent to working for corporates and originality means death. This is the culture which permits the math department to conduct a PG Programme without having a single pure mathematician in their department. In spite of all these problems, if a faculty or student at NITC decides to work on original problems, then it is a political act, it has more power than thousand slogans and it is a rebellion against the whole corporate ideology; it is in this broad sense that the 'politics' have to be seen by real academicians. There are many dimensions to this complex issue that needs to be examined but we hope that central point is clear. A national movement is going on to shift the academic and research culture in favour of corporate interests which gives minimal importance to real fundamental questions and the whole administrative machinery is being tuned to make sure that this is implemented. This is a completely ideological conservative and politically right wing agenda and can only be understood and countered by strong progressive political struggles.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it will be fair to say that the agenda of right wing political elements and corporate capital to make educational institutions like NITC into production centers of a robotic workforce is being smoothly carried out here. There are two prerequisites for such a plan; the first one is the existence of a faculty and student community which is politically unaware and ideologically dumb. The second one is an administration and its supporting cast which is sufficiently self centred to carry out these vile plans without any remorse. Both are there in our institute and that is our main problem. We have wondered why no action is being taken against the current administration by those in the higher reaches of power in spite of there being very strong clues about wide spread irregularities; we now understand that the freedom to loot comes as the prize for following orders from above and for systematically and meticulously dismantling the educational fabric of the institution and replacing it by a culture based on greed and selfishness. The effect of such a culture can be catastrophic. To quote Chomsky again: "A depoliticized population could very easily be mobilized into thinking it's somebody else's fault: "Why are our lives collapsing? There have to be bad guys out there doing something for things to be going so badly'. If you can whip people into irrational frenzies like that, they can be extremely dangerous: that's what 1930s Fascism came from, and something like that could very easily happen here". Another effect, apart from fascistic tendencies that Chomsky is mentioning, is for the student community to move towards religious fundamentalism. This explains a tremendous increase in fundamental religious movements in our institute in the
last decade. The 'apolitical' gang does not have any reservations against such elements and are always ready to give these movements space inside the institute, in fact many in the 'apolitical' gang are active sympathisers of religious fundamentalism of one sought or the other. To be creative and to have an individuality are two basic needs of a human being and when he finds himself in a culture created especially to quash any sought of meaningful creative activity and to encourage the loss of individuality, he will try to attain a certain level of self respect by the use of power and by degrading others. This is the root cause of the sadistic act of ragging; ragging is not a policing issue as made out by the supreme court and accepted without question by the institutes, it is a cultural and political issue in the sense that it is the reaction of young men and women to an environment that does not give them space for creation and building an individual identity. When Saseendran tries to stop ragging by using iron rules, he is treating the symptom and not the real disease; the real cancer is himself and his friends who are trying overtime to create a system which is completely anti human. What is therefore needed is a comprehensive change in the way NITC is being governed which should bring about a drastic change in culture; this cannot be done in 'apolitical' ways because these issues are very political, rebellion should take the form of strongly political organisation and ideological motivation.

  1. Started well, but it was too much communist in philosophy.it's true, meritocracy is disappearing in campus.

Dont every one coming to NITC want a job ?
and best paying job no matter what ?

Capitalism do not mean corruption. If capitalism means more industry relation it is good. After all engineering is application. But point of Physics dept is well noted.
Do you think where union exists corruption is not there ? NITC is ill,but Communism is no cure.
    Nice writing by the way.

  2. Oh no!!! this is a delayed attempt!!

    Nothing is going to happen!!!

Our mailbox have seen a lot of blogs and nonsense messages from the students.

I hope NITC will start a New "Center for Counseling" !

It is a fact that most of the academic decisions (all) in NITC are made without much discussions among its members.

In fact, there were many occasions from which I understand that NITC is meant for the faculties and not for the students.

Also, I feel that most of the students (may be due to some fear factors) are showing pseudo-respects to the authorities and faculties (to whom marks and grades are their trump cards!).

Student community can come out of this fear factors only if they follow some ethics in life (expecting the same from the faculties). Here lies the importance of following a strong ideology which may be called right or left or spiritual (oops! i meant a family who think right and act right, not the one who widen their prayer group and make its members close their eyes).

Let me appreciate the blogger for presenting a valuable study. I believe blogger used the names of a few faculty members only to attract the readers. In fact, they are only a few symbols!

As Mr.RKW mentioned Communism may not be a right option. But, note the point: we have seen the rise of Maoism where Communism also fails..!

I request each faculty to sit with their students and understand their problems instead of winding them up with rules and regulations. Best of Luck!!

Let the students be free birds...we need free thinkers,we need an active and a dynamic campus, we need non-selfish people who think about our society, we need people who can manage themselves and their system.....and we need people who can create a corruption free India...yes the students, they are our future!!!

  4. Well, it is nice to know that the brain death of students of NITC is not complete, there are pockets of resistance where someone uses brain for the same purpose our predecessors once used...to question the existing, and striving to make it better through investigation and debate...

    I must confess that my hopes are low even when I wish this endeavor all success. Still, wonders happen everyday.... who knows, maybe one day NITC might again become the sanctuary of intellectuals it once was... As P B Shelly said;

"If winter comes, can spring be far behind?..."

Anyways...loved the posts...keep up the good work...

  6. Great blog. Yours is a great institute with such capable persons. Why you people worry about corruption . Teaching is a noble profession. Why not dedicate yourself for teaching.
All said and done, do you know that there is senior level person in NITC without a proper basic degree. He did earn PGs based on his fake certificate of Calicut University.

  7. Your work is truly commendable and I really appreciate it. As a matter of fact these words you have penned most probably will make no difference , but it can , maybe, stir up a sense of 'right politics' and a need to revolt against any ideologically wrong malpractices. ( IF that's worth anything) . Once again , wonderful work !!

  8. To comment, first of all I am grateful to the owner of save NITC for igniting the once suppressed revolt against the corrupted with this exhortation. The Institute which once was ranked at the 4th position among all universities in India has taken a big leap to the 38th position after the advent of G.R.C Reddy’s reign. The delay in this insurgence itself insinuates the pons asinorum to stage protests.

Addressing the second issue posted above: ‘Why, in spite of this naked looting, has not any popular movements being mobilized against the rot?’, it is apparent that the director and his support bunch are the only people who enjoy the freedom to create and change rules at their wish. The vigilance office at NITC can be adjudged as administrator’s right hand. In the wake of a predicament emanating from student community, they conveniently try and ignore justice to litigate the rebels with all their means. They either coax the students against the trouble-makers or stoop as low as giving lesser marks so as to keep a check on the number of rebels. Instances have been reported where in Prof. Jessy and the vigilance officer Prof. Revathi of Mathematics department were heard advising students not to talk to certain people whom they call ‘politically oriented students’. The insidious idea works well in this corporate manic society as a huge lot of students defer fearing their grades lest it should deprive them of getting a placement which is misapprehended as the acme of ladder of education by our society.

The entirety of blame cannot thus be situated on the heads of administration alone. Society has an equal share in corruption. Parents foster their children as obedient dogs and inculcate in them the very thought of advantages of abiding by the rules or rather always nodding ‘yes boss’. This shuts the leeway. Children don’t think independently because their character is wrought thus. They are taught to play the role of spectators, as if the crisis wouldn’t affect them, than to take part in the rebellion; to stay away from trouble than to create one for the corrupt. These days, it is seldom that you see a parent encouraging his/her child for raising their voice against a teacher who is a well-known rot. Hence in spite of being aware of the corruption students remain silent because they always prefer to enjoy the benefits (the effortless way) than being cast out as rebels. They fob off as neutrals that are not with the corrupt and not with the rebels, they have nothing to do with whatever is eventuating around; all that matters is to get good grades and a well paid job. Wrong! There is nothing as neutral. Situation here is the same as that in politics: either you are left or you are against left. There are no neutrals. Maybe people don’t realize silence is assent or maybe they do and prefer it that way. It is this money minded attitude that is corrupting an individual. In an institution like NITC, majority of the students are NRIs or from wealthy families of above kind. It is only a ‘handful’ who nurtures insurgent thoughts in them. Lack of support thus explains the delay in rebellion which cannot be executed effectively unless and until the student community realizes the extent to which they are being exploited and give their full support for it is also their parent’s hard earned money as any common man’s that is bloating the pockets of not only these money minded, selfish administrators but also of people in and around NITC who are dancing to their tunes.

  9. Coming to the third issue ‘Academic Capitalism’, it is very much evident that the courses offered at NITC are all job oriented and the administration is aiming 100 percent placement for students. As can be seen, irrespective of the course studied, an average finalist well versed in English is assured a place in the corporate world. The rule is like this: a student who has already received a placement is not to attend the test for another company unless that firm offers a higher pay or is a core one. Only very few lucky ones get into core companies, rest all march into out sourcing software firms of various grades. It is rightly voiced that NITC is serving the corporate world. All they are doing is start a job oriented course, teach the subjects for grading purpose (who is bothered whether the student learns when the faculty handling the subject is reading it for the first time), groom the students into software bunnies and get them a job. Metaphorically speaking, it is like the functioning of a machine manufacturing a product to be used in the market. These manufactured products lack one major trait in humans which make them humans: individuality.

It is interesting to hear that the PG courses started recently in the maths, physics and chemistry departments are conducting walk in admissions owing to lack of students. The high fee structure supplemented with poor faculties, affect these courses to turn out as bad competitors to the PG courses offered in other universities. The situation prevailing in these departments are most awful. An instance reported from maths department says: The grades of main project work for PG course in mathematics are assigned weighing the number of pages in the report and number of software programs run. If you are able to display a 3D graph in matlab during your presentation, you get all applause (‘WOW!’) and a high score (no matter if you do not know matlab and has run an inbuilt program, never panic, be bold, people there are as blank as you!) Also, the first question that is asked after a presentation there is: What is the real life application of your work? (If you are talking about any vector or Hilbert spaces in pure maths, better find such spaces in this universe in advance or you work is unsatisfactory, incomplete or whatever!) The question in itself is not without logic, but the idea that grades are to be awarded based on this question is idiotic; it completely undermines the purpose of having a math department. The situation is the same in physics too. An instance has also been recorded where a student working in fourier analysis, gave a mathematical proof for Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle in a presentation and a very knowledgeable professor who was also in charge of admissions is rumoured to have asked a ‘real life application’ for uncertainty principle (Heisenberg would himself wonder). The surpassing doctoral education these people hold is perceptible. Why are they doing this crime? Why are these departments run under the name of pure science? The argument is refuted stating their act as developing the science required for engineers; a statement asserted subtly to mask their ignorance in pure science.

    Continued. . .

    ReplyDelete
  10. The researchers in pure science must be undergoing turmoil and depression working in the applied science departments (as they should be called). Comprehensive vivas are malevolently utilized for settling of scores among faculties which can effect to failing students. When nothing on earth can enlighten these rots on philosophy, it is no wonder that a discussion at NITC on the idea of giving the degree 'Doctor of Engineering' materialized. Research for them is nothing near a probe into the ultimate truth. It is merely the time to make practical changes in existing state of affairs (which is done either by writing a new software program or implementing whatever you have learnt, in an industry) and all that counts in the DC is the number of publications in journals. If you are doing genuine research stipulation will be proof of conjectures in every presentation.
As mentioned in ‘The façade’ another lot are people who show preferential treatment. The upcoming UG dean is one of that kind. He is biased towards girls and is said to usually clarify doubts with frequent contacts (girls beware!). Exhibiting such derisive conduct in an educational institution is despicable.

So, it is high time that students rise from oblivion and resuscitate the once repressed insurrection against these first rate crooks. Any further delay would end up in an irrevocable state of affairs. The appeal to students is to join hands to over throw this putrid administration.

    Concluded.

  11. I am a faculty member at NITC. Your blog has driven me to introspection. I believe it is time for most of us to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It looks like that the friends behind this save NIT are utterly confused about their motive. First para is too mundane and local and the rest are a confused mix of political jargons! It is also surprising to see that the way in which the article related many aspects of NITC is not in accordance with the views expressed in the later parts of it. Many an occasion the real motive of targeting specific people or actions bares out!
The authors should have tried to raise the real issue of what these types of institutions would provide the students, people and for that matter to the nation? Is the curriculum of these so called institutes of “National Importance” is any way helpful in molding responsible and committed citizens and make them come out with overall developed personalities? The answer is a big NO! These types of institutions including IITs are just giving classes in technical subjects in very very narrow perspective and not contributing to their overall intellectual aspects. Students in their late teens and early twenties require teaching and learing environment to build them to become a whole human being with lofty ideals (how much they will assimilate these ideals is another matter). They have to learn along with their technical topics literature, science, history, language etc. Even if such things are not directly incorporated in to their curriculam they should get an ambiance of these things. Unfortunately the students are deprived of all these. Most of them are pruned by their parents for a BTech course and designed them so that their child hood is devoid of anything connected to humanities. Of course I am not denying the fact that some of the parents are “visionaries “ in that they would give their ward some coaching in some dance and music and even in some literary competitions! But that too is with an eye to get some “prizes” and incentive which would provide them some added advantage in getting admission to these so called professional institutions! Thus they enters these institutions with out any motivation in the large sense but with the only one motive of cornering plum posts ( in terms of salary!) in some multinational companies! Till recently ( after the recession started) there were only few takers for public sector jobs! Those who opted for such jobs in placements were generally considerd as not promising! So the mantra is a BTech and then if possible an MBA that too after a spell in some posh multinational cos as coolies or the like!
    Continued....

    ReplyDelete
  13. So the question is are these institutes of national importance where, the government with tax payers money spending too much, for this purpose? The only extracurricular activity these students get seems to be in ragging!
In contrast you take the case of engineering institutes in some famous university campuses like Jadavapur University in Kolkotta! Jadavapur university engineering institute is ranked above all the NITS in the country! Just visit the campus and see what type of exposure these students are getting compared to the NITs!
There is a wrong notion among the so called “professionals” that arts and humanities and for that matter all other disciplines are not worthy and should be kept out of reach of professional students ( government also wants this for another reason – to develop intellectually deprived professional who will not ask unwanted questions or revolt at crucial times). But look modern time great institutes of technology like MIT or Caltech in the US. As in any great university, all the Despines including music is available there event though their name carries a term “Technology”. However our so called technology teachers won’t allow this here – in fact these people do not know that such subjects are available in MIT and the like! As usual they are not bothered to look for that, they never read such useless ideas! They had never allowed their minds to wander to such silly matters! It is a real fact that the self appointed spokespersons of technical education “pedigree” keepers never read anything serious! They never allow their minds to go beyond Kunnamamngalam!

  14. The problem with many new efforts in politics is that it degenerates into personalized attacks and become a platform to target specific groups and also to settle personal scores! If you allow this to contintue, the reliability of this forum will be lost and your very purpose would be defeated. Please take care to approve only allegations with at least elements of truth and substance! People with interior motives will use your forum for mudslinging particular departments and people. So beware of keeping your blog out of reach to such things: I shall comment on some such allegations and comments found in your own article and also in some comments!
The comments about the science deaprtments are silly and devoid of truth: it is damaging to students like us as it will give an impression that we had be deprived of quality education and facilities and with substandard teaching stuff. While it is true that the main reason for student crunch in the PG course offered by physics department ( I am a student of physics and does not want to comment about other departments)is because of the exorbitant fee, there are other reasons also:
    1. A course structure which is not common in our country and prolonged.
    2. The confusion about the space for students coming out of this course. The course is supposed to train us for photonics industry. However the photonic industry in this country is not considerable enough to provide job to those coming out of such courses every year. However it should be noted that photonics is emerging as one of futuristic technolgy and world over universitites and institues are competing to offer courses in photonics so that their country would have enough manpower! So there is nothing wrong in that the department designed such a course. But as I pointed out that there is a serious doubt that the structure of the course is appropriate and this may be a students deterrent reason.
Another reason is that the vast majority of the BSc students in colleges across Kerala and India is not aware of the fact that NITC is running a course for them. The failure of the department and NITC in marketing the course and giving enough publicity is one major impediment in getting students. NIT C is giving minuscule advertisements while IITS and even fund deprived universities are giving huge advertisements for their course. This is underlined by the fact that a large number of good students responded when news is given in local newspapers about sopot admission! It is to be wondered how many ordinary people and BSc students watch the NIT web site and minuscule ads to see a course for them in NITC which is know to offer only BTech and MTech courses.
Also this is not a problem with our course. Spots admissions were there in all most all departments here to fill the vacant seats! There are courses in some engineering departments which are not filled even by 50% even after a third round of spot admissions!

One comment says that our teachers are stupid and asking foolish questions! Alas! from where they got this idea? Is it again to put a spoke in the career of our future? That we are lot got under trained by such incompetent faculty! It is obvious that the commentators are trying settle personal scores! Why make us scape goats!
I am a final year student and for that matter in the firt batch of the course about which a comment came: None of us is working in Fourier Analysis problems. As far as my knowledge, no PhD scholar is working in this department on this. Then how that incidence of student" working in Fourier analysis and question of ‘real life application’ for uncertainty principle happened? Stories are cooked up to malign people, Please beware to verify the comments! Otherwise you will loss the credibility!

    ReplyDelete
  15. It would be useful to note these facts while reading the comments:

Even after third round of spot admissions, a pG course in Mechanical Engg department and another one in Nanotechnology departnement are not yet filled even to 50%

Almost 90% MTech seats in electrical engineering departments are filled only by spot admission!
This is even when the course is with fellowship!

    What are the conclusions?
Students attraction to courses depends on changing placement trends. It goes on changes! Relating to it to other great reasons are shortsighted!

  16. "The Institute which once was ranked at the 4th position among all universities in India has taken a big leap to the 38th position"

    A JOKE!
It would be interesting to know who assigned this small time engineering college, with a handful of conventional engineering branches accorded the 4th position and now 38th position? It is a joke!
This NIT or REC is now where, it were also nowhere, and with this vision, it will also be nowhere!

  17. There seems to be some confusion in NITC regarding my comment on fourier analysis and uncertainity principle. Some seems to think that it happened in the physics department, it didnt. It happened in the math department and if what I have written gave you the impression that it was in physics, it was unintended. Second, some young men and women seems to have the opinion that there is nothing wrong in asking a practical application of the uncertainty principle. They should do well to remember that it is a natural law and that the question is as foolish as asking a practical application of the law of gravity. The fact that we are standing on the ground and not floating around is not an application of gravity, it is a consequence of gravity and both are not the same. The point is that our brains are being wired by the system into thinking that it is legitimate and good to ask a practical application of anything and everything, even of natural laws like gravity and uncertainty.

  18. We all talk about developmental activities that have taken place in NIT, but what NIT itself lays bare before us is quite the contrary.

I happened to look at the total budget that our college has released under the RTI act, and as said the results are not surprising but quite expected yet something that needs to be looked into.

The expenses for construction and purchase have had quite an exponential growth

    from 13 crores in 2005 -2006 to 80 crores in 2008-2009 with 100 crore expected in 2009-2010 and 115 in 2010-2011.
Even in this section we can see that projects like Megahostel even though were seen as early as 2006-2007 did not have any significant actual allowance till 2009-2010. Each year a huge sum was projected for the project but nothing was given, on the other hand Architecture, Science Block, and Central Academic Building were projects that came after the said megahostel project yet were completed before.

Looking into it again if we were to look at the academic expenses section, we can easily see a expenditure column called UG Project work which had an expense of 2.65 lakhs n 2005-2006 and 2.1 in 2006-2007 it has gone down to 0.5 and 0 lakhs respectively in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.

RD also decreased from 6 lakhs to 1 lakh but in 2008 -2009 it seems to have picked up back to 8 lakhs but everytime the revised estimates give a much smaller figure for R&D but higher figures for many other projects.

Excluding the increase in pay and stipends the academic plans of this college have sadly stagnated and hence there is only one way for the whole thing to go - crashing downward unless and until some actual academic input is put

I would any day prefer more academic activity in a smaller institution, but sadly the monetary promises of such things aren't great to the outsiders.

REC witnessed the back door entry of many mediocre or 3rd rated level faculty during the rules of the corrupt and notarious Kerala education ministers, based on their relegion, cast and money power. Then what brain drain. There are many highly qualified (not intellectually) new faculty joined. But vast majority of them came for just for a job and no more. It is foolish to expect from these people anything that requires a high degree of intellectual honesty and integrity. They will lie down if they are asked by the authorities to sit!
Many of those gone are only representatives of these! Do not draw much form such exits!

  26. Left or right leaning political movements are not the panacea for all ills in the campus. They have vitiated the academic atmosphere in colleges for years. The students should have a say in the academic affairs of the institute, no doubt. But the teaching - learning process should also go unhindered. There is no guarantee that this would happen once if the political parties enter into the scene. This is substantiated in the campuses in kerala.

Regarding the issue of corruption, it is high time that instead of preaching that corruption exists, at least a case should be brought to light with proof. This is not to deny that it does not exist, but for punishing the guilty, such an action is necessary. Hope the institute will see better days ahead, with the exit of the current head.

No one is interested in studies. Those who study are muggers and on paper have 9 pointer. Those who know something are with 6 pointer.Placement depends on your posh english.CC is meant for facebooking, most of the books in library are accumulating dust,we refer books prescribed in the syllabus only, photocopy shop is the lifeline,we are interested in everything that sounds us cool..there is no unity except in statemates..in true sense its a regional college..nothing look like national except the website...

Being a person who (somehow) got out of the college and, having had just enough experience regarding this bullcrap, I dont think there is any step which can save nitc unlike what the blog title hopes. But this realization shall never back students out of criticizing the screwed up acts.

Even I had knowledge about such stuffs of my time in college. People who elevate the problems are those staffs and sub standard faculties, including professors, who define college not as a society but just a technical education centre. And the inefficient sac being formed every year, irrespective of which party forms it, has a part in the deterioration.

Guys.. I just want to say, dont drain yourself out running behind this. Make sure you enjoy the life in college.

  30. good work.

i just hope something happens. ppl say the quality of students in coming down. just look at the quality of some faculties.

    1. Mr. K.sekar , Faculty , Assistant Professor , Mechanical Engineering. i doubt whether he knows anything. how was he even appointed?? he taught Fluid Machinery when he did not know the basic pascal's law. if anyone is not convinced, talk to this person about anything for 5 mins, and you will know what i am talking.

    2. Mr . G . Varaprasad , Faculty , Assistant Professor , Mechanical Engineering. he is famous for providing S Grade to all girls who takes his coarse. if a girl who is average in studies and wants to get a S grade can opt for the courses he offers. and if a guy mess in class he can be sure he is gonna fail or get D or E grade. this can be certified by anyone who has attended the course he offered. he even calls almost all the girls over the phone and tells them that they have not done well in exam. but he still gives them S Grade, then why did he call?? ohh god. this is the limits.

Dr. G. R. C. Reddy , Director , National Institute Of Technology Calicut..
please go through this blog, i guess most ppl have already read this. this is a single incident about this person who was caught for Plagiarism when he was was invited to the congress to inaugurate the valedictory function
    http://knowventure.blogspot.com/2007/02/plagiarism-or-academicism-perish-those.html

there are many more such examples.

besides in nitc, its like "dont mess with faculties, they can fail you or give bad grades, so if u want good grades, be on their good books" grades was used a weapon by most faculties to suppress student protest etc

In nitc a student knows pretty much what to expect in a exam, so most ppl dont go through text books, but go through some photocopies of some students who take down notes in class.

So many changes have to be made in order to make nitc a better place. Can it be achieved or live thinking this is how it is supposed to be. But hope and pray that it happens someday.

This although is hard 2 achieve coz MHRD itself wants this institute 2 b a Faberge Hen, how else can 1 explain the survival of this Dictatorship 4 so long. Corruption is a different issue, but do u really need 2 destroy teenage students lives & careers, who have left their homes & its sanctuary for the 1st time in their life, who know nothing about the world & just want 2 learn, & who have trusted these blood sucking vampires with their life & career. There are ways you can get out of NITC, if you are a rebel then you need a strong SAC to support, which is in fact are few students who conduct RAGAM and buy a bike/gift for their girl friend etc .... they are equally corrupted and self oriented, on the other side there are faculties to whom if ask "WHY" they might fail you. best example is NAZEER, as you/half of the class will fail a basic subject if he is teaching.
well said about VARA, and this is a situation in most of the classes where if you are a girl there is an easy way out.
i personally enjoyed my 5 years in colg, and got through with many E and D grades. all i had to do was bunk less classes,i know this is not a solution but at the end you have to getout of the colg and live the better part.

  37. Very well xpressed. The fact that the institution is a deemed institution means that eveyrhitn is in the hands ofd the faculty and therefore, the students voice is obviously inaudible. take for example the recent suspension issue...15 studnets were suspended...then, afta the protest and evrythin, they agreed to a re-enquiry. And finally, the judgement was passed. for the 11 students in architecture, excpet 2 of them, who were left clean, 5 received 5 weeks, 1 received 6 weeks and then 3 mnths, 4 mnths and a student with 6 months when initially the punishment was that of 1 year for evry1..when the re-enquiry results were declared, there was joy among the studnts, justice is served. however, wat evry1 fails to see is that eventually, they did the same thing, 9 of theses students were effectively punished for a year. people who have 5 weeks also already have atendance shortage. they cant register for the next sem due to lack of credits and thereofre, eventually ts a year back tself...just that these cunning people got the students of the case. and how can v be sure that afta they get get a year back and are repeating that the faculty will pass them. The defects of our deemed uni..all power is in the hands of the faculty.they are happy wit u,,,ur life is made..n if u happen 2 b a lil bold..then u r screwd..sumthin needs to be done.

  38. At the outset let me congratulate the blogger for a well crafted, meticulously structured white paper regarding the state of affairs of NITC. This is an Institute of national importance for which approximately Rs 150/- Cr is spent annually as recurring expense apart from hundred of crores invested on infrastructures. This public money is looted in day light by a small group. If somebody points a finger against this robbery, they will be threatened and silenced. TA/DA bill of the incumbent Director for the last five years have already included in the Guinness Book of World Records!
The real stake holders of any academic institution are the faculty members. It is a different story altogether in NITC. Nobody is interested to even understand the extent and depth of the corruption and if anyone dares to talk about it he will be silenced. Social commitment is an unheard word among them. They earnestly believe that the Institute is set to give employment and promotions to them. Student and his needs, expectations and privileges are of no concern for them. As long as the promotions and other avenues are open to them, robbery of public money does not bother them. They are unanimous in adopting any sort of oppressive measures to silence a rebellious student, however genuine is the reason for revolt.
Any sort of atrocities committed by the authorities cannot be resisted unless and otherwise the affected group realises the gravity of the problem and started revolting. Elderly students of the campus realised this and started revolting against many arbitrary activities in the campus, during the second half of this decade. Chief Warden Murali, was an enthroned king of the campus, enjoying 'foods and beverages' provided by the canteen contractors and was not prepared to hear the complaint of the inmates. He enjoyed pleasure in limiting the water supply to hostels for just three hours in the morning and three hours in the evening, even during the severe floods! There were no clear cut policies for allotting family accommodation for the research scholars. It was done at the whims and fancies of the Students Dean. Research Scholars were not given a seat to sit or a computer to work. Ph D theses were kept in PG Dean's office for years without sending it for evaluation. People were arbitrarily selected for academic positions and rank lists were not made public. All the recruitment process was done clandestinely and in an advertisement the then Registrar (Ananthan) went to the extent of publishing in the official website that RTI Act is not applicable to NITC! The provision of communal reservation for SC/ST and OBC, as stipulated in the Constitution was never followed.

    Continued . . . . .

  39. Concerted activities carried out by a small group of elderly students started paying dividends. Murali was dethroned and water supply to hostels was made available round the clock. Director himself convened the meeting of research scholars to hear personally their grievances. Policy guidelines were formulated for allotment of family accommodation to research scholars. (It may be an irony that many of the beneficiaries who occupied the apartments, stayed for some time and still keeps the custody of it. Even though they have left the campus for all practical purposes, still keeping it under their custody and depriving the chance of the real needy people, elderly ones and ladies). Instructions were given to all department heads regarding seating and computer facility. Chief Information Commissioner of India, Mr. Wajahath Habibullah himself intervened and Ananthan faced music. The Commission for SC &ST intervened and directed for furnishing the details of recruitment. A select list of faculty was made public in the year 2007, for the first time in the history of NITC! In that recruitment representation was given for SC/ST and OBC.
As time elapsed, people started thinking that things will go for ever like this and necessity of resisting the injustice was down played. While enjoying the fruits of the gains earned by the predecessors, the successor generations, belittled the activities of the elders. While occupying the faculty apartment obtained by virtue of their position as research scholars, people commuted to their work places like government departments and pvt. engineering colleges. Some of them are using it as guest houses to be occupied for one or two days in a year. Research scholars lost all the privileges and they are treated just like any other students! Now they are jam packed in single rooms on a twin sharing basis. I feel pity for this fraternity for selecting NITC for research.
History tells that the injustice will continue, till the affected group started revolting, many times violently. Anti student activities of NITC cannot be curtailed without active involvement of all the students.

  40. The sorry state of affairs in the institute continue.. A meeting of the parents of the students of the institute was announced through the website and convened on 6th October 2010. Reliable sources indicate that fewer than 20 parents attended the meeting. The reason for such low attendance is attributed to the insufficient publicity of the meeting. The authorities had published the notice in the institute website alone and not in the dailies in the state. Such callous and irresponsible attitude is unpardonable. What is the reason behind such steps? Who are they afraid of? Is the Director afraid of getting a bad name among the higher echelons of power, due to this publicity which might hamper his chances of getting a new term or an extension of the present term? Are the authorities really concerned about the genuine welfare of the students??

  43. Finally it happened. The Faculty and staff blocked the Chairman, Board of Governors (BOG) of NITC at the NITC Guest House. This happened after a secrect meeting of the BOG was held and members signed the minutes(perhaps even without actually meeting). The employees were waiting to meet the chairman before the BOG meeting. They wanted to request the chairman not to take any major policy decisions in the meeting until the board is properly constituted according to NIT Act. However the meeting had already taken place in hiding and the employees were cheated.

Bowing to public protest, the chairman was forced to give in writing (after mediation by police) to the members of the staff and faculty associations that all decisions taken in "secret meeting" will be withdrawn.

It is sad that the two NITC faculty in the BOG Prof. E. Gopinathan and Prof. K. S. Sivanandan also played party to the "secret affair".

  44. NITC has gone to the extreme.
First time in the history of NITC/CREC the convocation was delayed. that too due to action of a group of faculty of who are deprived the facilities by the present administration.
there is evidence that the Board of governors meeting for taking most important strategic decisions of the campus is conducted without the quorum. now it is conducted without the presence of chairman.
now the combined teaching and non teaching staff consortium is vigilant against the decisions in whims and fancies of Director with support of KALA Prabhakaran, Abraham T Mathew, Liiykutty, Paul Joseph, M L Joy, et. al.

Fascist and authoritarian tendencies should be decried from any side. So called leaders without following, who tired to silence dissenting voices, heinous acts of ordering people who are not toeing their line to get out of the association, accruing benefits secretly by virtue of of leadership etc. are to be decried and opposed. Regimentation should not be and will not be allowed. Association work is not wrestling!

Poor fellow Predeep (is like a school boy). The above crimes are done by Reddy, not by the association. And he is a beneficiary of accrued benefits by virtue of closeness to leadership!

Do you think that these people can lead or contribute any thing to clean the NIT baggage or public life. Many who are now in the forefront of rebellion are discredited goofs who where fallen out of the grace of the authorities for one or the other reason and now licking their wounds. 51. There is a so called faculty association which makes occasional hue and cry to threaten GRC Reddy so that it is assured that the leaders of this fake association get bread pieces thrown by the same GRC. One glaring example is that of its old secretary Dr.Murali Krishnan who tries to don the mantle of a saint and child revolutionary at his middle age. This spartan guy secretly arranged 4 advanced increments from the very GRC Reddy he used to fight in the open. This is when people who are having double post graduation and pdf from reputed foreign universities, with years of teaching and work experience after PhD were denied even legitimate pay scales, this Murali Krishanan with a QIP PhD and having not a single published paper after his PhD got himself awarded a promotion along with four advanced increments! He should have told the director to the face that I do not need your advanced increments when this revolutionary leaders' followers were denied even just pay scales, they rightly deserved! We all know how and why the authorities gift trade union leaders these types gifts and increments!

  52. As rightly pointedout it is not over. The next Director’s main job will be to undo the damages by Reddy (throwing MScTECH to dustbin/warangal, withdrawing undue benefits to wagging tails, giving due benefits which was denied, etc. etc. ). You agree that some damages are beyond repair. Reddy bought in some uncivilized/ useless(useful for spitting badwords/harassing research scolars/ splitting association) species in campus, and their perverted culture. They does influence many cultured people here. It is easy to trace them without name -by impolite messages( Kattanghal class is noble and much beyond their reach).

  53. Again just look at the other leading lights of the faculty association! Every one knows that the guruji of this false body is one Dr.Suresh Babu and every one in the NIT knew that till sometime back this fellow was a stooge and quotation gangester of the very GRC Reddy he is fighting now. With the blessings of GRC Reddy he used to torture poor faculty members. This fellow stopped teaching a long ago and was engaged in the job of clerk in the placement cell. During the times of IT boom he was claiming that he was disbursing jobs to the students of NITC. When recession came this fellow put the blame on the poor standards of NITC for the students not getting placements. Till sometime back his favorite past time was to move around the departments supplying photocopies of local newspaper cuttings showing his placement achievements! Then suddenly this fellow fell apart from GRC Reddy and started playing the role of the rebel and using the association for settling his scores with the director.
For the Professor position in national institutes like NITS or IITs it is expected that the person has good publication records, research supervision experience etc. In any such institute worth its name, a person without a good number published papers and research guidance experience could never expect to become a professor. Still this fellow without a single reserach paper to his credit after PhD, without even guiding a single PhD student got professor ship! Yes it was the gift of Dr.GRC Reddy during his honeymoon period as Director at Calicut! If this QIP programme was not there, this fellow could never see the steps of an IIT for PhD. Still shamelessly this fellow sports an IIT tag with his PhD. If you doubt the veracity of these just go to his web page and see!
With this man as leader what the faculty association and for that matter the NITC is going to achieve? The association lost the moral grounds to fight with these "mercy professors" (meaning those got professorship with mercy from GRC Reddy) in its forefront!
Throw out these fellows and come clean then only save NIT forum will win.

  54. one of the leading light of the so called faculty association, Dr.Vineet paleri is another mercy professor of some REC principal. This fellow has not published a single paper after his phd or during the last 7 to 6 years! In any IIT or for that matter any good university can you see a professor like this. This fellow had so far not guided a single PhD. Ofcourse thsese type of fellows are fit for small time engineering colleges! not for teaching cream of students like those coming to NITs with great expectations. People like this fellow forget that they are being given plum salaries by the MHRD for doing research and resesasrch guidance also. This 10 am to 4 pm mercy professor without any shame takes home the plum salary given for such duties including research (publication is the result of research or if you do not believe in this you can show some industrial product or get some Nobel prize!). Such shameless guys are the leaders of NITC revolution! With these types of leaders how you weaken your "bitch" which is "still healthy". These guys are the real bitches.

  55. More on TKSB
This is not the first time Suresh Babu creating issues and becoming hero of the situation. History tells that TKSB was a vociferous leader of faculty association, when Gokhale took over as the Director. He was in the forefront to criticise the Director for all the good and bad things happened and was creating all the nuisance in the campus. Realising the exact requirement of this power hungry man, intelligent Gokhale made him the Chairman of Admissions in the level of an HOD. By doing so, Gokhale could buy peace and carry out the activities he intended to do, without any opposition from the very intelligent faculty members of NITC.
Due to the change in the Union Government, all the Directors of NITs were asked to resign. When it was certain that Gokhale has to quit, TKSB again started revolting on behalf of the faculty association. Just like what happened in the campus just two days back, Gokhale was blocked, ill treated and even prevented from signing a cheque, under the leadership of TKSB. Gokhale's last day in the campus was so uncomfortable and unceremonious due to the agitation of faculty under the leadership of this vociferous leader.
When Gokhale applied for the post of Director again, naturally TKSB had to resist it by all means. He flooded MHRD with complaints and allegations against Gokhale. Consdering the "merit" of TKSB's complaint, MHRD included Gokhale's name in the rank list of Directors of NITC. Immediately, TKSB realised the danger, dashed an e-mail to Gokhale, praising him for the fantastic work he had done and welcoming him to NITC! [Copy of the mail is still with one of the senior faculty member of MED]. TKSB defeated the track record of African chameleons for instantaneous changing of skin colour!
Rest is history and we all know what this leader has done during Reddy's tenure. By praising Reddy and doing all sorts of dirty jobs and ruining the future of many students, this gentle man became the Professor of Placement. In the year 2008, when ONGC came to the campus to recruit people against the backlog vacancies of OBC/SC/ST at a starting salary of Rs 80 000/pm, he refused to give them a date. ONGC recruited Engineers from other Engineering Colleges, depriving the chance of poor OBC/SC/ST students of NITC. He derives pleasure out of ill treating the down trodden students.
When Sobhan became the chamcha of Reddy, TKSB virtually lost the chance to lick and explore the possibilities of climbing up. When the exit of Reddy became a reality, as usual, TKSB pounced on him to attack. Hitting a dead body cannot be termed as bravery. As long as people like TKSB are the leaders, the faculty association cannot serve any common cause and the future is grim.

  56. Now everything is clear. You people have only one agenda. You have some personal scores to settle with GRC Reddy and in that course you started a blog and started mud slinging on people. For that you are using naïve Marxist jargons to perfume your filthy yellow journalism. Any body associated with Marximsm or for that matter any sense of philosophy or politics now know that your jargons are childish and you have no idea about the predicament or philosophical problems of Marxism or the social dynamics. As somebody earlier pointed out if you were serious about the intellectual bankruptcy of the students or faculty or non teaching staff, you would never had conducted your campaign this way. It should have maintained a decency. IT IS CLEAR THAT ANY SERIOUS PERSON CONCERNED ABOUT THE ISSUES PLAGUING INSTITUTIONS LIKE NITC SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED AND CAMPAIGNED AGAINST THE VERY EXISTANCE OF THESE TYPES OF ELITE INSITUTIONS SUCKING THE PUBLIC MONEY AND WASTIGNG IT FOR A FEW THOUSAND STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING TRAINED TO BECOME “COOLIES “ OF MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES OR WHOSE ULTIMATE AIM IS TO SERVE THE DECAYING USA. THIS IS WHEN THOUSANDS OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS IN INDIA WHICH ARE THE ONLY ASYLUM OF THE CROORES OF POOR INDIANS ARE DENIED ANY FUNDS FOR INFRASTRUCURE AND FACULTY. It is clear what you people are worried about. Some disgruntled elements who are denied undue promotions and missed some pay scales or denied the opportunity of QIP (for enjoying in some IITs or IISc three four years and spend their honey moon period there without doing any job and extracting their salary and allowences. What this poor country get by these substandard opportunists who never read anything get a phd through QIP? Yes Dr GRC should be appreciated for his bold act of denying these goons such looting. CBI raided his office but not found any evidence for any corruption and they left it there as another one in the hundereds of anonymous allegations they are getting every day. NOw main stream news papers also got the truth and stopped publishing such news about GRC. 62. REVOLUTION IS THROUGH THE BARREL OF THE GUN AND NOT THROUGH FILTHY YELLOW JOURNALISM OF THE LOWEST ORDER
Let me introduce myself. I am P.Predeep, Professor at the department of physics, NIT Calicut. I must not be a strange to me as your commentators are dragging my name also to your “revolutionary” blog! I am proud that I am the first person (may be the last also) to write a comment in your blog with out hiding under the security of anonymity! I had practiced t his in my whole actions and you the blog administrator and the handful of cowardly, intellectually castrated group of comment writers do know me well too. I used to air my opinions in the faculty association meetings, HoD meetings, Senate and whichever forums I was a member, openly and without fear. I had seen all these anonymous writers and their colleagues sitting there with tight lips and drooped heads, occasionally opening their mouth to point out grammatical and spelling corrections, which they felt as a safe activity which the very GRC Reddy may not dislike!. The cowardice nature of this people are always visible and every body and even they themselves knew that they are not made with a stuff that make them bold enough to speak out their opinions. You can see parallels for these people’s cowardice only in great novels like ANIMAL FARM and DHARMA PURANAM.
I am writing this because my name was implicated and dragged in two comments which you published. The provocation for that was my open e-mail to the faculty about a cowardice act of one of my colleagues regarding the farewell party to Dr GRC Reddy. The comment writer lacked the guts to write his opinions openly (even after the GRC Reddy left!- covariance and fear are like that, it is genetic in nature – you can not escape from it even if the assigned and assumed tormentor leave, your psyche would continue with status quo).
    (Continued....)

  63. Revolution is through ... continuing (by P.Predeep)

Now I would like to warn you that your blog contents (including your editorials – first you used some political jargons to add flavor to your cheap attacks on Reddy but now your editorial smells like shit) and the comment (even a child can see that almost all comments are coming from the same group) are becoming highly personalized and abysmally cheapest. Almost all are dirty and filthy personal attacks. Do you think that this will serve the purpose of saving NIT ? It looks like that NITC should be saved from this blog and the dirty filth it is throwing into the face of the very NITC. So if you want to correct something please be decent and keep your things open. When you, the SAVE NIT blog owners themselves prefer to be anonymous it is natural if one concludes that your are lumpen cowards. This blog has now transformed into a predecessor of the old THANINIRAM news paper which had been a synonym of filth and mudslinging of the lowest grade in Kerala’s public life. But still I am sure that by comparing you people with THANINIRAM, I am doing a great injustice to Mr. Kalanilayam Krishnan Nair , the owner and chief editor of that paper, since he at least was bold and honest enough to keep his identity open. But then these hiding professors who talks artificial accents and imitate Yanki’s in their bad tastes are not the people who are nothing to loss! They have a lot to lose and many things to hide even their current status and positions were undue gifts from their old masters!
Be aware that you opened a new tradition in NITC of spreading filthy canard against faculty, some people do not like in the campus. But obviously it already started back firing. A stage has been reached where the obvious proponents behind this dirty business started getting back the filth in the same coin and you are in a position but not to publish it. Filth is always double edged . Just remember the famous biblical statement about the one who resort to the sword first.
Your started your blog with some leftist jargons which are out dated long back. I agree that Mraxism is not failed and as long as the downtrodden and torturers are there its relevance would stay but the corrupt followers of communism of various hues and colors has nothing to do with Marxism or Leninism. They are hopelessly under the influence of all vices of all sorts. Their student organizations are also the same. They represent all the wises and filth inherited by the right wing student organizations of yesteryears. So your exhortations to invite them to the campus for saving it is obviously meaning less and disastrous. One could see how these so called left students organizations finished the ordinary as well as engineering college campuses of Kerala.

  64. P.Perdeep continuing....

Now coming to the Faculty association and its leading lights are the next hope , in your opinion, the saviors. Every body knew these few so called leaders. They are not that sorts with any intellectual moorings or taste. I genuinely doubt their intellectual credentials. I do not think they ever have any sympathy to any leftist ideas or feelings. By default they belong to that class of apolitical middle class who are the victims of consumerism and who do not have that bad habit of reading anything serious other than comics for the benefit of their children (not at all apolitical intellectuals). They are small time cowards who never showed the guts to fight any of the evils plaguing NITC. They are not known to have any ideological commitments of any sorts. They do not even have that minimum social commitments which are necessary for the leaders of a service organization. They never speak out in democratic forums of an autonomous body like NITC. In HoD meetings, in the Senate etc., they always used to maintain a conspicuous silence. They never bothered to put up any resistance or movement against GRC Reddy or his so called “anti teacher” actions at the appropriate times. When they are in power like HoDs they never help their colleagues with their service problems. Instead they now started talking and demonstrating when it become doubly sure that GRC is leaving. What is this to be called about – cowardice of the lowest order or great example of renaissance.!
Now coming to the so called “filth” GRC Reddy left here: This was already a filthy place and to that filthy place only GRC Reddy came. None with commonsense expected from GRC a great academician or reformer. He was an REC teacher just like many of these leaders and he was also very much proud of his Warangal REC as these fellows are proud of their old REC culture. He came at a time when the REC is being forced to get transformed into an institute of National importance like that of IITs. This was the mistake the MHRD made. For a poor engineering college, (which is of course comparatively better among the three or four Kerala aided and government engineering colleges) it is too much to stand that pressure. Students are young they can always expect. Teachers are old and you cannot change them over night. It is everybody’s knowledge that during the regimes of various principals of old REC many are left out in promotions naturally due to various considerations. Though GRC initially done the commendable act of undoing such injustices to many senior faculty , he could not continue to apply the same scale to all further promotions. I do not want to comment on the right or wrong of his decisions. This naturally caused discontent. Similarly he exerted pressure on the faculty on aspects like publications, projects etc and while he succeeded in this to a certain extent, again this was not impressed many who may be thinking that research is not the aim of their appointment here. They wanted to “teach” and produce “quality” engineering graduates that they sincerely believed to. There was also a widespread feeling that what is the right of a person at our own REC level to put pressure on them to do research and deny them what they think their natural rights (as they enjoyed in the REC). But many of them forgot that they were discarded in promotions by the REC principals on various grounds like nepotism, casteism etc. In fact Dr.Reddy could not be blamed that he denied promotions to any person with sound research and teaching achievements.

    ReplyDelete
  65. P.Predeep continuing..

Many of the preachers of descent now were Dr.Reddy’s right hand persons. They got promotions in his time without any research credentials. They are the real beneficiaries of the Reddy’s initial benevolence. They adorned powerful positions with his blessings, always got his appreciation. They terrorized others and students under the protection of their proximity and appreciation of the authorities.
Another class of dissenters were professors and luminaries of yester years. They got professorship in an early stage again without any research or that type of essential credentials any university in India or outside country demands for a professorship. Why I am saying this because this category of neo rebels of the institute always sports a global cult with artificial accents and contempt for common man and their values etc. They think that they belong to an elite class by virtue of the topic they teach. Because of the globalized job boom in India their branch enjoyed some “prestigious positions” among the students by way of their employability, top ranks etc. Naturally they also felt an elevated feeling and importance in the campus. However as this class was basking in such glories in the pre NIT period of the NIT, they suddenly got angry with the demand for research and development, papers etc, that are ,unfortunately the major criteria of faculty assessment in national as well as international institutes, not their cake. They were enjoying the glory of the Professor status of the NITC but to continue with their REC baggage and at any cost digest anything which challenges their pre NIT greatness. Naturally they also started gossiping against the GRC Reddy, who they doubted trying to pull them out of their self assigned greatness. (Remember this institute in its old avatar as REC had the culture of even tables designated as Professor Table, AP table, Lecture table etc. – see how great!
This class also showed a disgust with other h especially science. In their childish mentality they think that no other course or branch should be started here and their insecurity feeling is so high that they think that the other schools are hell. They are affected by inferiority complex and “frog in the well syndrome”. They are not ready to see the writing on the wall and always used to put up resistance to any act of change.
They are yelling from the roof top that during the last five years all the quality has gone in NIT. Before five years what was there which makes this a nationally important institute? When the new library complex was announced I remember these same people murmuring “this is only for corruption, why we need a library when we had already a “great” library etc. You blog man please watch and check how many of these great professors visit the library! . It was surprising how an opportunity to get a great library was not welcomed! This was the great culture five years back! Their proud comfort was: we had the engineering wonder of going around the campus without getting wet even in heavy rains. They opposed any expansion of the small campus of the college and so narrow is the outlook.
I do not know what looting and corruption Dr.Reddy had done during the last five years. This is like baseless allegation in the political arena. On the basis of anonymous letters (our culture!) CBI came to NIT sometime back asking for relevant documents ( they put it as RAID). Now almost one year passed, they did not found any incriminating documents against GRC. These people may say CBI also corrupt! My opinion is let the law take its course. If you are sure that Dr.Reddy looted get the evidence and give it to CBI or vigilance and let him be booked. Why making baseless cries of corruption. Of course there are as always corrupt people hovering around the authorities and their actions may reflect on the person like some of his old faithfuls’ actions reflected on him.

  66. P.Pedeep continuing...

During the pay revision, a large number of our colleagues feel that they got rubbed badly and denied their dues. What faculty association did for them. They always (deliberately) delayed their responses. They never came forward for any solid actions like agitations. Satyagraha or even resorting to legal means. When Dr.Reddy had withdrawn the Associate Professor positions given to our colleagues, the association could have gone to the court to get a stay! But they never did. This was the pattern. On their part authorities also played the game of keeping the association leaders happy , who are having some nuisance value by giving some undue increments etc. Once getting these they pleaded inability of any action. For saying this in an association meeting, the then secretary ordered me to get out. This was intolerance and fascist mentality these so called rebels keep. These people are now yelling against GRC’s intolerance.
This naïve faculty association rejected my demand for asking for IIT pay scales. Instead they sermoned that UGC pay scale is good in the sense that it would assure automatic promotions and grades. You see the great academic quality drive of these people. I remember I had warned them you will end up with UGC scales and IIT promotion conditions - and see now were we are!
Another heinous act of your blog writers is the campaign of corruption in faculty appointments. I am sure that the faculty appointments during GRC regime was the most transparent and fair. I suggest the readers to make a comparative study of the bio data of those people he recruited with those recruited before him and see if the newly recruited are inferior in any way. In fact these new faculty are highly qualified and unequivocally stand up to the so called IIT standards.. It is a heinous act of cruelty to tarnish the more than 100 odd faculty got selected during the last five years as corrupt, the leaders of this association and the save NIT forum (both are same, of course) are engaging in cheap mud slinging and this is resulting only in tarnishing the image of the NIT among general public and among students.

Now about the personal attacks of accruing undue benefits I got from my closeness with GRC:
I had supported and criticized GRC alike on his actions which I felt correct and bad respectively in the relevant forums. I had seen him as the head of the institution at his level. I had never expected from GRC a great visionary or educationalist. In many counts he had proved to be a good administrator. He had his undoings which everybody know without mention. The current system selected him as our head, However I am not ready to turn my eyes from the tremendous growth he brought here by infrastructure and his efforts to improve the research output of the institute. His policy of incentives for research out put from faculty like cash awards for paper publication, patents, seed money for new faculty, student project support etc. are not available in many NITS. Though he himself was not a great researcher or the sorts he succeeded in bringing a research culture, though meager to NITC. We should see this in the backdrop of NITC having almost zero research culture while NITs like Warrangal etc. were way ahead. Even the CUSAT which was getting far below funds for its running, is fiercely ahead of us. This is not a ranking from commercial magazine rankings or fake WEBOMETRIC rankings which the so called association spokespersons spread around. You can see where we stand from a serious study made by Dr.Gangan Pratap et al. (Ranking of Indian engineering and technological institutes for their research performance during 1999–2008- Gangan Prathap and B. M. Gupta, CURRENT SCIENCE, VOL. 97, NO. 3, 10 AUGUST 2009, pp 304). When IISc ranked 1, Jadavpur university ranked 6 ( above some IITs), and CUSAT ranked 11, NIT Rourkela, NIT Warangal, and TRICHY ranked 20 to 22 positions respectively, we NITC was not even seen in the list.! This is where we were and much worse earlier. Now what is the meaning in saying Dr.Reddy brought it down from some Wuthering heights? So we had to go up and surely gone up, whatsoever small it may be, and Reddy also contributed to it. His incentive programme for research publication, in a way it is a shame if others came to know about it. When even small universities publish better than us, we require some cash incentives, why? Is it because of Reddy, these intelligent and genius people are not publishing their great research(?)
Another important aspect of Reddy era is that he defied the REC culture of upper class chauvinism. In this discrimination you can be proud that REC and later NIT are at par with IITs – in blocking the constitutional provision of reservation to the so called lower class people in the guise of merit. You people denied the downtrodden people education and everything for centuries and now you are saying that they are not meritorious. I salute Dr.Reddy in this count. He, even though belongs to the so called upper class, boldly opened the doors of NITC to SC/ST/OBC and Muslims. Before him how many such people were allowed in this “ariostocratic” campus by the great UK Pillais etc. Also he readily implemented the 27% OBC reservation here. This is again one of the reasons for these upper class chauvinist’s intolerance to GRC Reddy.

Of course as I mentioned earlier, Dr.Reddy’s some satellites’ actions are discouraging researchers with horrible delays and red tapism. He should have distanced from them. I am proud that I fought for it but as part of the great REC culture, nobody came in the open to support me. Even many individuals responded, the great leaders of the faculty association never raised their hands to help the hapless researchers. They never bothered because as usual these were not their problems. Now these persons blatantly try to play the role of rebles and revolutionaries – Save revolution!
Sundays, Saturdays and holidays this NIT campus looked deserted. This is in contrast to any good university or institute campus. This is slowly changing but is this the great culture they want to bring back! Again the great culture they wanted emulate is insipid and cruel. You cannot find any of this association people even during death or accident to a colleague if it happens outside the two km area around NITC! They will give a plastic cup to their colleague who leave after decades of service !

Finally I would like to answer some allegation made against me in two comments (ofcouse by spine less anonymous):
    1. I had not received any personal favors from Dr.Reddy. He even denied my due service protection. Thus I lost my 27 years of old service.
    2. I had not received any promotions or any positions or similar favors from GRC as a gift .
    3. Dr.Reddy many a times denied me duty leave for my academic activities. He even once denied me a duty leave to conduct a PhD viva voice exam at the Indian Institute of Science.
    4. I had not received any special project support not available to other faculty.
    5. I had not made any foreign or Indian trip using NIT funds which GRC had provided to many faculty in the NIT ( it is their legitimate right to enjoy that facility, and not GRCs personal gift.) However I had not applied for that even.
    6. Of course as the head of the department of Physics I tired to develop the department with new course and facilities. I do not think there is any thing wrong corrupt in it. It was my duty and I had tried my best to impress upon the director the need for developing physics as physics is the back bone of any engineering. It is common knowledge that a good physics department speaks volumes about the quality of a technical institute. The unfortunate thing is that here some people including the leaders of the faculty association with their “frog in the well syndrome” wanted to kill and stop science flourishing at NITC. They wanted to keep us as in the oppressive times of REC. This was due to their personal handicaps of intellectual bankruptcy and lack of exposure. But I am happy that I succeeded in making science resurge and flourish in NITC and the greatest beneficiary of this will be the NITC students. I would have done the same thing with any other director, GRC or otherwise and I am sure any sensible director with vision and love to the institute would have done the same or more help to me in this Endeavour.
    7. I campaigned and strived to start an MSc course but failed in my attempt to GRC. However I attribute the blame not to him but my colleagues and even these rebel people who did not help m in my efforts in bodies like Senate. I even tried to change the MSc Tech to a dual degeee programme but still at the senate no body helped. People all say they did not want MSc tech but nobody was ready to come in the open to oppose, instead many supported out of fear in front of GRC. As usual these revolutionary leaders kept their silence
    8. I did not need undue help from GRC Reddy or any Director for my research. I got projects based on my work from funding agencies and these are one of the largest amount in NITC. I had developed out of these an individual lab which is one of best research labs in the institute. I am sure my publication history would not be a shame to this NIT.

    ReplyDelete
  70. P.Pedeep continues...
    9. Of course I campaigned for new course and new departments. It is the only way an institute develop and reach the status assigned to it. It is not a small time engineering college with only five or six conventional branches. Courses are to be started with long term perspective of developing man power for emerging technologies. It is not like private engineering deemed universities starting course for a day and making money. Some courses may not look attractive at the immediate present but prove to be necessary so as the country won’t miss technological revolutions. Should we abhor nanotechnology, should biotechnology an irrelevant topic that merict NIT’s rejection, should we not accept engineering physics. Many of those opposed engineering physics confessed to me that they never heard of such a subject. Should we wait for these peoples’ approval for starting a very popular and common topic which has more than 100 years old in Europe and US just because thee guys are ignorant about such things? It is a pity that these people never bothered to look into the web site of the leading IITs before opposing this course and confessing their ignorance. Do you thing with this type of vision and ignorance they would be able to discuss the merit of any course and it is ridiculous to think that they would any time approve the starting such courses.

NOW THIS ANONYMOUS COMMENTATORS, CAN YOU SPECIFY WHAT BEFEFITS I HAD ACCRUED WITH CLOSENESS TO AUTHORITIES? IF YOU CAN PROVE ANY SUCH PERSONAL BENEFIT, I AM READY TO RESIGN FROM NITC. ARE YOU HEARING THE ANONYMOUS COWARD? COME FORWARD AND PROVE AND ELIMINATE ME FROM YOUR REC SO THAT IT BECOME PURE. I AM AN ORDINARY MAN VERY MUCH GROUND TO EARTH AND MOVING WITH COMMON MAN AND NOT LIKE YOU PEOPLE WITH A CONTEMPT FOR SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AMD CHERISH UPPER CLASS CHAVUNISM. .

Incidentally the blog boasts about the Kerala culture of descent. If at all any such thing exist it was lost long time back. Invariably the middle class culture is that of absolute submission and boot liking and come out against when they are damn sure that the enemy is left. Same thing happened. The great revolutionaries are hiding till they knew that Dr Reddy is leaving and now they are celebrating their “victory”. What a great joke!

  75. There was no reason for anybody here for a personal enimity with Reddy. What were opposed his wrong policies and actions. He created history in NITC by way of the following:
    •First director without minimum qualifications.
•Causing CBI raid in the NITC/ CREC office for the first time
•Without formal education from a better institute.
•Declared in the senate his political linkage to various political parties (--- I am with the left -- right ---and middle ---)
•“reported Senate about starting of new courses” after getting approval from BOG.
•Caught for plagiarism in public speech.
•“mass promotion” flouting all norms of quality to please people( many were pleased indeed! ).
    •No h-index
•“mass recruitment drives” to please his bosses, flouting all norms of quality.
•Managed “official air tickets for his friends” from all NITs to attend his daughter’s marriage at Warangal by arranging a “workshop”

Dr Pradeep was very BRAVE in supporting his director.Supporting a autocratic ruler require so much of courage! Opposing are cowards.

    British Moral:
Cowards in India opposed the British policies(Gandhi, Nehru, Patel,...). All BRAVE and nice people in India supported British (later they were known as TRAITORS!).

Anybody consider your monthly salary as charity from Reddy? Promoting a meritorious faculty or awarding him with increment as per govt rules are not charity by Reddy (he couldn’t prevent them, actually.) People who are nowhere to assess the caliber of Dr Paleri or Dr Babu should not do it.

Dr Murali is a Best Thesis award recipient from IISC Banglore and BTech first Rank holder from CUSAT (not the local “research/ all rounder award” which was a charity by Reddy for his obedient).

The IITs& IISC does not differentiate QIP scholar's pHd as different from the rest. But they do believe their PhDs as much superior from the rest in the country. You can match IIT pHd with non-IIT Phd + "n" top Intl journal publications.

    ReplyDelete
  76. There are few comments about old faculty members of NITC who got Ph.D. under QIP QIP PhDs and Mercy professors) which is unacceptable. Atleast they were good enough to get a nice faculty position after UG degree when getting a teaching post was not so easy.
These comments in filthy language must be from one of the newly recruited faculty members who
we see are mostly frustrated with the atmosphere here. May be they expected ppl to receive
them with warm welcome and others be proud of their PhDs and pdfs and publications. Most of
us who have been teaching here for some time know that all these qualifications are kind of
superflous and there is nothing great about getting a PhD and 2/3 pdfs without being able to get a job at the right time -except a very few among you-. If you were so inclined to academics and got all these great degrees owing to dedication to academics, in the first place you would not have joined in this not so great institute! All the lab facilities that you see around in NITC is mostly developed by these mercy professors that too at a time when getting even small amout was difficult either from instuitute side or from academic bodies.

Now you have a plum money to look after your teaching and research and still you remain mostly frustrated. There is no point
in calling your senior colleague 'bastards', 'those who would not see the doors of IITs if there were no QIP programme' - that was a joke man - ! etc. out of your frustration. Most of them are far better than you who got all these degrees just becuase you were not absorbed anywere inspite of your great academic value. And its a fact that in many depts in IITs there is this story that if you force a Donkey through the front door of IITs, by the time it reaches the back door a Ph.D. tag will be hanging on it. Either QIP or regular.

    ReplyDelete
  77. One of the mistakes that Reddy has done is to recruit many of these dumbs who think that they have superior qualifications and therefore they deserve more. Poor Reddy must have been mesmerised by these certificates. His vision was abviously limited. From day one these ppl are complaining about the standards of NITC.
If its standard are not good you are the ppl to improve it or Why don't you use the option to quit? It is sad that ppl like you bring no hope about future inspite of the fact that you are all young and just out of college and therefor should have some research potential. Nothing unenexpected of you, who can use such a filthy language out of frustration.

It was Pradeep's tactics to stick to Director and try get his work done. Many a times we have seen him sitting in Directors chamber talking
with the director about current political scenario - just killing time, listening to all the waste Reddy pounces out and advising uneducated Reddy to whats good and whats not - when many other ppl were waiting outside
to meet director for official purpose. This is not beibng close to director, this is just licking his boots. This was not expected out of a person who has so many years of research and teaching experience. Pradeeps motives brought more suspecian when its heard that he attached Reddy's name also to one of his/his students papers to please him. Probably thats point were Pradeep lost all his credibility. What a shame man? What lesson are you teaching your students? There is a limit to the extent to which you can be a "submissive middle class". Now you have defined what a middle class Academician is like. And don't put Reddy to Missiha fame by
saying that he started recruiting SC/ST/OBCs ""EVEN THOUGH he belonged to upper caste"". It had started long before him through a case filed by some of the senior faculty here which you can readily verify. I want to tell this becuase many of my poor colleagues might
mistake Reddy as their savior just becuase of Pradeep's comments. It would be shamefull for you to twist facts and lie to protect Reddy because you want to ensure that Reddy's image is clean and so you are also clean.

Most of the ppl know about TKSB and others who play politics for thier gains and are well aware of the danger being associated with these kind. But on the conv. day what happened in front of Guest house was a blowing up of suppressed anger towards the admin. It was not becuase Reddy was leaving and he will not bite anymore. It was just becuase ppl felt they should protest at least then and they get no more chance. There was an option to not to protest and be in the good books of Reddy. Who knows next time you go to Delhi he might arrage you an AC Guest house in AICTE headquarters!

I would like to reamin annony. because I want to laugh when I meet praddep, also want to be friendly with my new colleagues and I am basically a social coward.

  79. So SR you want to laugh when you meet me keeping all the rancor and dirty mud and knife at your back to stab me... I am not surprised for, by now I understand this is the celebrated REC culture. Be proud of that dirty culture. Asking any body who complain against his work place to "go to somewhere else if you do not like" is the essence of fascism. This is the way small time local gangsters behave. But they are not nonentities. They talk in the open at least! Your leader also once told me to get out of the meeting for making "noise"!
But for your information, I should tell you that I had not attached Reddy's name to any of my students' papers. There are many such stories being drafted in my name. It is not bravery to spread baseless canards. Now I wont't ask people like you to come out. It needs a thing called back bone! It was interesting to watch the drama in the last staff meeting. If all those who made noise there, would have talked at least with half of that volume in any of Reddy's meetings, GRC would not have become such a big "tormentor".
Bye the bye, I am happy that one of the disqualification of GRC Reddy is that he had no "h-factor". Absolutely right! but dear sir, don't you know that parameters like "impact factor", "h-factor", citation index etc are "haram" for the NITC's great academics, especially the so called leaders of NITC revolution. You just find out what are the h-factors of these great leaders of the association. If Reddy's h-factor is zero, theirs are negative. You always get the leader you deserve! All IITs. IISc, or any good institution in India or in the world that matters, insist good h-factor in their facutly recruitment. If you make it compulsory to have an h-factor here, they are sure to burn NITC upside down!. I hope no director would do it here and if anybody dare at all, only God could help him.
I talk and discuss politics and anything I like anywhere were I had an audience, if it is in the coffee shop or in the faculty room or in the Director's room. In your opinion it may be boot licking. When people like you, who left and lost your spine somewhere, spin venom on me any sensible person could understand its meaning.

About the SC/ST/OBC reservation the "SR" says it started long back with a court case. Please give the statistics, how many SC/ST faculty were here in this campus five years back. The upper class goons like you always enjoyed the predicament of these oppressed class. In the IITs how many are there? The IITs stopped recruiting at lecturer level only to subvert resrvation. Nobody did anything against it. No court was or is there to protect them. There are scores of court cases and court verdicts but all of them were sabotaged cleverly by the upper class lobbies. For implementing reservation in these so called "elite" institutes it requires guts. People like you would attribute all ills of the NITC to the entry of these once oppressed people here. It is natural. I have no hesitation in appreciating anybody who push open the gates of such self proclaimed citadels of upper class who clamor and thrive on the facade of fake "merit". So don't say such things and it won't work any more! Now I could hear you people making sounds here and there about the SC/ST faculty's "poor" showing. This is the only thing you can do - cry out your feelings!
Mr.SR is wondering what lesson I am teaching my students. Better you worry about your teaching and your students!
I thought this SR is the initials of some faculty and just feeling happy that at least initials are coming out and anyway it is a good sign, but then only I understood people having initials never hide under anonymity and throw shit on others.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It seems that SR is trying to settle personal scores with Pradeep. I personally feel that most of the statements made by Pradeep are true, except his relationship with GRC. From the comments of SR, it is clear that he is envois of Pradeep due to the clout he enjoyed with GRC and as he could not get a chance for pada pooja of GRC.
I would like to clarify on the point regarding appointment of SC/ST/OBC candidates as faculty members, history tells us that neither it has happened due to the magnanimity of GRC as claimed by Pradeep nor due the court issue as indicated by SR. As pointed out in my comment in this blog itself, it all happened due to the intervention of National Commission for SC & ST, a constitutional body. To quote from the earlier comment: "Chief Information Commissioner of India, Mr. Wajahath Habibullah himself intervened and Ananthan faced music. The Commission for SC &ST intervened and directed for furnishing the details of recruitment. A select list of faculty was made public in the year 2007, for the first time in the history of NITC! In that recruitment representation was given for SC/ST and OBC".
Hence it is clear that GRC was compelled to give representations to these sectors, definitely not a gift by GRC as propagated by Pradeep or Paul. SR is ignorant of this. Ignorance is pardonable, but not the distortion of history!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Why so much discussion on people like Reddy, TKSB, Pradeep Paul etc. All of them represent the big class of opportunists. Every one knows about the way in which Reddy used TKSB for troubling a dean whom he found not tamable for his tunes, for getting publicity for the institute etc. Predeep knew how to serve Reddy for getting his favours and Paul does not deserve a comment. This selfless saint is the most selfish person in the campus.
If this blog is to serve something good leave the history and start discussing things happening arround now after Reddy's exit.

    ReplyDelete
  82. This is certainly noy a place to discuss history of reservation in NITC.

But as an answer to annony who spills indecent attack on me I want to write this. I can show you few of the SC/ST/OBC faculty here who have been recruited under quota about 10 years before, pending to a clearing of case filed by faculty here. I am one of those who benefitted by that case. My statement was that Reddy did not start it.

Your claim of Reddy getting compelled and being obliged to start reservations here is
absolutely rubbish. Reservation to faculty positions started here in 1998 recruitment
when MPC was the pricipal. That was well long before your Wajahath/ SC/ST Ccommission put
    their nose into this matter.

If someone like you who don't even understood what I wrote and meat say that history is twisted it certainly won't happen my friend. First of all you should learn to understand things and then respond without jumping into stupid conclussions.

I dont know how many of the readers feel that I have scores with Pradeep to settle or I envy him for not me getting a chance to lick Reddy boot, after readign my comments. I know Pradeep is a down-to-earth man with the "swingings of middle class post modern ex-communists". I only pointed out that some of the things he did and said was not acceptable to me.

I request the annony. if he is of anything worth, not to read between the lines, to show some sense and don't make this palce to attack people unncecessorily.

Sorry that I had to write things which are irrelevant to the topic of this blog.

  83. I have been following this interesting blog closely for quite some time. The inside and to some extent the secret administrative affairs of NITC are not totally unknown to me. Hence, I feel that I should write something here.

The comments show that Dr.Pradeep has put forward a spirited defence of Reddyism. Yet he claims that he is Marxist-Leninist by thought and deed. Not surprisingly, GRC himself has often claimed that he is Com. Yechury’s friend and that he was a Naxalite in his heydays. Nothing could be more funny and ironic! Anyway, going by Dr.Pradeep’s arguments, you would be tempted to conclude that GRC should receive the next Bharat Ratna for his outstanding record in ‘social service.’ Let us wait and see; maybe the CBI shall make a recommendation from their side.

Dr.Pradeep loudly claims that GRC was magnanimous. I do not blame him for that. GRC has indeed been magnanimous to two persons. First, he had been so magnanimous to himself that the CBI itself had to have a look into it. The fact that the CBI found no proof of his magnanimity does not imply that he was not sufficiently generous to himself. (The CBI has not yet conclusively proved that Sr. Abhaya was murdered by Sr. Sefy and her clergy-lovers; yet, it is common knowledge as to why and how the killing occurred.) Other than to himself, GRC is known to have been magnanimous only to Dr.Pradeep. In all probability, had GRC not been magnanimous to such a great extent, Dr.Pradeep would probably not have been in NITC now. It is an openly rumoured that a very serious complaint letter regarding Dr.Pradeep’s conduct was received by GRC from a former student. Allegedly in the name of upholding the reputation of the institution, no enquiry was conducted and no action was initiated. The letter, it is said, went into the safe custody of GRC. Arguably, GRC seems to have used it pretty well to tame the Marxist-Leninist revolutionary in Dr.Pradeep and presumably since then, Dr.Pradeep became an ardent Reddy-devotee and a great advocate of Reddyism. Thankfully, nobody else in NITC has ever required such a big favour. So, Dr.Pradeep shall go on composing psalms in praise of his lord GRC. Small wonder.

In spite of this, some of the points raised by Dr.Pradeep are not without merit.

  84. I was a student at NIT who passed out in 2008. I was very deeply involved in the protests led by some students against injustices and corruption at NITC and I am one among those who was very badly treated by many faculty members because of my active involvement in the protests. Many of those who speak about the need for protests now were in the forefront of the anti - rebels movement then. But, I am still happy that they have been able to understand the need for protests in this unjust institute. At that time, we students were very apprehensive against many faculty members who were at the forefront of the movement aimed at cutting out all protest movements, so we once made a list of those faculties who have maximum hatred towards students who are protesting. And I clearly remember that Pradeep Sir was in that list and we always knew that he was one of the closest men to Director. At that time also he used to publicly tell students and faculty that he is left, so to confirm this we contacted the party DC and called someone at kollam to enquire about his politics because we knew that he had worked in some college at kollam before, I forgot which college. The report that we got from union circles was that we should be very careful not to believe the stories that pradeep sir says, they told us that his left leaning is just pure acting and in spirit he is ultra conservative. From that time onwards we listed him firmly among psuedo lefts in the campus (whose leader was paul sir)and we always considered psuedo lefts more dangerous to students movements than conservatives. So I laughed for quite some time after reading the things that pradeep sir has written here, he has not changed at all.
